UPDATE: Westbound 401 in Tilbury reopened

One person has been sent to hospital with minor injuries after a crash involving four transport trucks on Highway 401 in Tilbury.

The Ministry of Transportation and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said the westbound lanes of the 401 near the Tilbury OnRoute at Queens Line have reopened.

The crash happened at around noon and the highway reopened at around 4 p.m.

There's no word yet on any charges.

The OPP said officers have responded to six collisions in construction zones along Highway 401 in Chatham-Kent since the beginning of April. Drivers are also being reminded that all fines are doubled in construction zones.

The OPP is reminding drivers to slow down in construction zones like the one in Tilbury to avoid crashes.

"The Chatham Kent detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) wants to remind drivers to be prepared for traffic slowdowns in construction zones in the eastbound and westbound lanes of Highway 401 through the area," said OPP Regional Media Relations Coordinator Derek Rogers. "Mostly end of queue collisions where traffic is either stopped or near a standstill because of construction. These don't have to happen."

The OPP said future collisions can be prevented by following a few simple tips:

  • Expect the unexpected. Drivers should be ready to encounter slowed or stopped traffic in these zones due to lane reductions necessary to facilitate roadwork.
  • Always drive at the posted reduced speed limit and keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you.
  • Don't tailgate - sudden stops are common in construction zones.
  • Watch for workers, new signs, traffic signals, pavement markings, or uneven pavement.
