Retrofest takes over downtown Chatham this weekend

The Classic Car Capital of Canada is getting ready to shine again with Retrofest this weekend.

Organizer Connie Beneteau said she expects about 600 classic cars to roll during the classic car cruise on King Street in downtown Chatham on Friday starting at around 6 p.m.

Retrofest will also have a classic car show downtown, live concerts at Tecumseh Park, vendors, soapbox racing, and free fun family attractions such as a 22-foot slide, a crawl park, an inflatable obstacle course, a jumping area, a pool with kiddie paddle boats and water balls for the older children and adults, and Miss Retrofest. There's also a "family-friendly" beverage garden at Tecumseh Park.

Beneteau said people should be aware that the rides close at 6 pm. each night and doesn't anyone to be disappointed or miss out on the fun.

"The rides on Friday go from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., at 6 p.m. they will shut down. So, if you're standing in line at five minutes to 6 and you don't get up to the ride, you're going to miss out. And the same thing on Saturday, the rides are from 10 a.m. until 6 pm.," said Beneteau.

Beneteau said she expects a large turnout and hopes everyone keeps cool, calm, and collected.

"Because we're expecting very large numbers of people, the traffic will be crazy. I'm hoping everybody comes out with kindness and patience and just has a good time," she said.

Retrofest usually draws about 30,000 people and Beneteau wants to remind everyone that the Fifth Street Bridge will be open this year because the Third Street bridge is closed.
