Weather Network calling for warm, stormy summer

It will definitely feel like a southern Ontario summer.

The Weather Network on Tuesday issued its summer outlook, and the region can expect to see warmer than normal temperatures, but not a dry season. Like most summers, the unstable atmosphere created by the heat and humidity will also bring periodic storms, followed by breaks of cool and comfortable weather.

Weather Network Meteorologist Dr. Doug Gillham tells MyNewsToday.ca that spring will go out with cooler temperatures, but once summer officially hits, it will feel like it.

"The first half of June will settle back to more of a seasonal, and even at times a cooler than seasonal pattern. But as we get into the heart of summer, late June, July, and August, we do expect warmer than normal temperatures," said Gillham.

With high pressure and an active jet stream bringing the warm weather, it also means unstable conditions that will bring storms. Gillham said we can expect to get soaked from time to time, and we won't see drought conditions like those still affecting the western United States.

"Summer precipitation is notorious for being hit-and-miss and sometimes coming all at once, so we don't think the drought takes over the story for the season, but there certainly will be periods of dry weather," said Gillham.

The forecast said, however, that the summer will not be a full-on sweatbox, as those who are not fans of the heat will be pleased to see some periods of cooler temperatures. Gillham said the forecast is ideal for the region's agribusiness, and kids who had been stuck inside for much of the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic should be able to enjoy themselves outdoors.

The Weather Network's summer outlook covers various regions of the country. For Atlantic Canada, a busy hurricane season is called for. Out west, there is not expected to be any of the deadly, oppressive heat waves that hit British Columbia and Alberta last summer, but there will be dry conditions that may spark wildfires. In northern Canada, near-normal or cooler temperatures are expected.
