Chatham-raised singer gets closer to winning a spot on the big stage

Independent singer-songwriter Kaitlyn Frances is getting closer to a chance to open for a superstar lineup at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

The 24-year-old Chatham native took first place in the wildcard round of the Opening Act, advancing her into the quarter-finals of the competition put on by Audacy.

Frances initially got beat out of the competition but says she was able to qualify for a wildcard round, which ultimately got her back into the competition.

"I had asked the community to help spread the word so I could get the chance to get back into the competition," she said. "The community pulled together and I got back into the competition."

Frances says she didn't expect to make it as far as she has, especially being a Canadian independent artist in an American contest.

"I didn't have expectations as for how far I was going to go," she said. "It was exciting to wake up this morning and see that I got back into the competition."

As for the next step in the competition, Frances is competing against nine other musicians for a spot in the semi-finals. Voters will have until 8 p.m. (PDT) on September 1 to vote for the semi-finalists.

"I am really happy to be here and I can't wait to see how far I can get," she said. "People are finding my music, my streams have been going up as well as my YouTube views. It's the kind of exposure that I needed."

In addition to performing alongside industry superstars, the Opening Act will receive their own private dressing room, a ton of exposure on the radio, and a cash prize of $10,000.

Last year's winner opened for Coldplay, Black Eyed Peas, Doja Cat, Kid Laroi, and Shawn Mendes.

The finalist will be announced on September 15.
