Purchase a pizza Wednesday and help fight polio

If there is ever a time to order a pizza, it's Wednesday night.

Several local pizzerias are once again partnering with local Rotary Clubs across Chatham-Kent to help raise funds and awareness for the eradication of polio.

This is the eighth year the event, Pizza for Polio, is being held in Chatham-Kent. The Rotary Club of Tilbury is also taking part.

Rotary Club President Jennifer Hill said residents can help the cause by placing an order at one of the participating restaurants.

"All the pizza places participating in Pizza for Polio will give us a donation and we will send it to the foundation for polio," said Hill.

As an active participant in polio eradication efforts, the Rotary Club of Chatham has raised a total of over $260,000 for the cause. The Rotary organization has contributed nearly $1.2 billion since 1985.

"The money goes to the eradication of polio," said Hill. "It goes to the foundation and then it gets tripped."

Participating pizzerias in Chatham include:

- Konstantinos

-Mike's Place, Andy's Place, and Steve's Pizzeria

-Original 2 Pizza

-Pizza Tonite

-Pie-Zano's

Participating pizzerias in Tilbury, Wheatley, and Merlin include:

-Garage Restaurant

-Pizza Pizza

-The Alley Pub & Grill

-Woodcraft Pizza

-OG Pizza

-Tillsbury Pizza Boy

Polio is a paralyzing infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of five and can be deadly.

The virus is often spread through contaminated water and can then attack the nervous system. World Polio Day is typically recognized around the globe in late October.

"There were about 12 cases this year, which is more than the last couple of years," said Hill. "Only Afghanistan and Pakistan have active cases."
