Chatham-Kent fire officials said that's one of the takeaways from a house fire on Dufferin Avenue in Chatham on Thursday that caused an estimated $100,000 in damage.
Fire crews were called to the scene just before 9:30 a.m. Thursday for a smoke investigation and found a small fire in one of the bedrooms on the second floor of the three-storey building.
Firefighters helped several occupants safely get out of the building where they were then treated by EMS for minor smoke inhalation.
One of the firefighters responding to the fire also suffered a minor injury while on scene and was treated and released shortly afterward.
Six people were displaced as a result of the fire and Chatham-Kent Police, Victim Services, and the Red Cross all teamed up to help them out.
Chatham-Kent fire officials are advising you to use flameless candles if possible and to always keep an eye on real candles if you're going to use them.
