KAYO Boxing Club taps into Downtown Chatham Centre

KAYO Boxing Club has found a new home at the Downtown Chatham Centre.

President Floyd Porter said the club was offered a spot at the centre on a temporary basis after spending almost 15 years at its Lacroix Street clubhouse.

The club had been searching for a new facility after being told the lease on it wasn't going to be renewed.

"We jumped on it," said Porter. "The exposure on it is fantastic, the location is fantastic, and the people we're working with have been next to perfect."

The new clubhouse at the Downtown Chatham Centre will be more than twice as big as the previous one. The club will officially move in on November 1 but members were able to start bringing in equipment in a few days earlier.

"It's been a lot of work to get it going and we've still got a lot of work to do, but we are excited about it," said Porter.

The new clubhouse will have its own entrance on King Street West, so members won't have to go through the mall to get access to the club.

According to Porter, the club is looking into expanding its programs in order to draw more people in.

"Being a not-for-profit, we don't have a lot of funds so we have to expand the classes we have," said Porter.

The length of stay will depend on the proposed redevelopment of the Downtown Chatham Centre.
