A cannabis producer located just outside of Chatham has announced a major expansion that will bring more jobs to the Municipality of Chatham-Kent.
On Tuesday afternoon, the municipality announced that Medisun, located near Grande Pointe, is partnering with Cannim Group, a global cannabis company based in Sydney, Australia. Art Caron, owner and founder of Medisun, said the partnership aims to add more employees to the local operation and expand Medisun's "already excellent" international reach within the cannabis market.
"In this vast growing and challenging industry, Medisun continues to champion high quality standard cannabis at large scale production focusing solely on wholesale partnerships. During which time we have had the honour to work with some amazing companies, but one in particular that stood out to us," said Caron. "Focusing on the safety, science and scale production of cannabis, Cannim Group is a family-founded corporation with the same values in why we started Medisun. It’s a perfect match."
Mayor Darrin Canniff said the announcement is great news for Chatham-Kent and beyond and he's behind the company 100 per cent.
"CK is synonymous with quality agricultural products, so we’re thrilled to see yet another Chatham-Kent agricultural business growing to better serve the people of CK and beyond," said Canniff. "It’s another sign of the great things coming for our community, and the Municipality of Chatham-Kent is happy to promote and support this ongoing growth."
Medisun boasts it is a leader in growing the best medicinal cannabis and its founders are farmers first.
"Our partnership with Cannim opens so many doors and upcoming career opportunities for Chatham-Kent. We couldn’t be more excited for this opportunity to grow, give back to the community, and put us on the map from a global stand point," said Shay Donati, Marketing Manager for Medisun.
The cannabis producer said Caron founded Envirofresh Farms before joining Medisun and is the former owner of SunMaster Produce, one of the highest yielding pepper greenhouses in North America. He also has experience in hemp cultivation and has more than 35 years of experience to help grow the company.
Medisun currently produces more than 30,000 kilograms of cannabis a year and said the annual production capacity will double when a new 13 acre hybrid greenhouse is complete to give the grower 26 total acres of growth area.
