OPP release collision and fatality data for 2022

The Ontario Provincial Police have unveiled their collected collision and fatality data for 2022.

The release from the OPP details the numbers regarding collisions and total fatalities from last year, and compares them to the totals from 2021. There are troubling increases year-over-year in a number of categories. The overall number of collisions on OPP patrolled highways increased by nearly 14,000 last year compared to 2021, and even more troubling, the total number of fatalities rose from 315 in 2021 to 359 last year. The number of alcohol and drug-related crashes doubled, from 32 in 2021 to 64 last year.

The number of motorcycle fatalities also jumped, with 44 last year compared to 35 in 2021. Commercial motor vehicle fatalities remained the exact same at 87. Boating fatalities saw a small climb from 27 in 2021 to 29 last season.
