Bothwell men's hockey league celebrates 50 years

A local hockey league is celebrating a major milestone.

The Bothwell Men's Hockey League marked 50 years this past week.

"The league started when the Bothwell arena opened its doors back in 1973," said League Executive Jordan Bray. "That was just before my time, so 50 years is a pretty big accomplishment."

According to Bray, the league originally started up as men's hockey, but over the years, the league grew. The league currently has 104 players, eight goalies, and a total of eight teams.

"We've tried to keep things as unchanged as possible and really respect the heritage and where the league has come from," said Bray.  "Most of the league is basically players that have wrapped up their juniors careers, some college players, and a couple former Canadian Hockey League players."

Last Friday, the league received a surprise message from Canadian hockey commentator Bob McKenzie.

"Bob put together a surprisingly long message to the boys involved, congratulating us on 50 years," said Bray. "We really went with the 50 theme and did as much as we could."

When asked what the league represents, Bray said it represented the community of Bothwell and the people who have done so much work to make the league what it is today.

"It's a pretty eclectic mix but there is a lot of talent," said Bray. "It's cool to see it all come together."

The Warriors recently celebrated coming out on top as champions for the 50th hockey season.
