New, free online resource available for youth struggling with addiction

"Crossing Bridges" is a new virtual counselling program for young people between the ages of 12 and 24 who are struggling to overcome an addiction.

This self-help resource lets users get in touch with qualified professionals, find information about substance use and addiction behaviors, and access other services and supports to help beat unhealthy habits.

Crossing Bridges was developed in partnership between two Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) branches - Thames Valley Addiction and Mental Health Services and Huron Perth Addiction and Mental Health Services. The program is available to youth across southwestern and midwestern Ontario.

"When young people begin to experience problematic substance use or a behavioral addiction, they may not seek help out of fear of judgment or consequence,” said CEO Catherine Hardman from the CMHA's Huron-Perth branch. “With the support of youth and community partners, Crossing Bridges was developed to meet young people at their level, on their terms. By providing support in a way that works for them, we hope more youth will be empowered to seek support when they need it.”

Crossing Bridges was reportedly co-designed by young people in the community in order to best serve the needs of their peers.

Counsellors associated with Crossing Bridges are registered social workers and social service workers who specialize in working with younger demographics.

Each patient who engages with the program will receive a customized support plan based on their goals and needs.

"The approach to counselling at Crossing Bridges is strengths-based, trauma-informed, and person-centred,” said Regional Director of London, North Middlesex, and Huron Pam Hill from the CMHA's Thames Valley branch. “It seeks to create a safe space for all youth where they can reflect on and process their thoughts and feelings without judgment.”

Crossing Bridges offers support for any type of addiction - including substance use, gambling, sex, and even gaming and social media. Services are available in both English and French.
