Chatham man makes a mess of his cell after arrest

A 31-year-old Chatham man who was initially arrested for some suspicious activity a local business got himself in even more trouble with the law when he allegedly used the floor and bench of a holding cell as a toilet.

Police said they arrested the man after responding to a business on Park Avenue East in Chatham for a break-in investigation shortly before 11:30 p.m. Monday.

Officers said they were told a man was trying to get into the building and arrested a man at the scene who matched the description of the suspect.

Police said they also reviewed some surveillance footage that showed the man -- who was banned from driving -- drove a vehicle into the business' parking lot with some drills, bolt cutters, wire strippers, and a flashlight.

Officers said he was also allegedly seen using the tools to damage a vending machine and two locks.

After the man was arrested, he was taken back to police headquarters and locked up in a holding cell.

Police said while the man was in custody, he allegedly urinated and defecated on the floor and the bench of the cell.

As a result of the investigation and the man's conduct in his cell, he was charged with two counts of mischief and one count each of driving a vehicle while banned and possession of break-in instruments.

He was later released with conditions and a future court date.
