A burn ban has been issued for Chatham-Kent.
The municipality issued the burn ban on Thursday afternoon, saying that all open-air burn permits, both for agricultural and recreational fires (campfires), within Chatham-Kent are suspended effective immediately.
The municipality said the burn ban was issued because of dry conditions, a lack of rain in the forecast, and the continuing air quality concerns.
“We would like to thank residents for doing their part and for understanding the ban has been put in place to protect our community during the continued dry weather conditions and poor air quality concerns,” explained Assistant Fire Chief Ken Labonte.
Assistant Fire Chief Labonte also thanked local farmers and the Kent Federation of Agriculture for their support and for working with Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services.
Officials expect the ban to be short, adding they are monitoring the situation.
Officials noted approved burning devices, such as gas fire tables, chimineas, and contained fireboxes no larger 24 inches in diameter are not included in the ban.
"If you are using an approved device, please do so responsibly and ensure the unit is located in an area that will not pose a risk for fire spread," said CK Fire Public Educator Whitney Burk.
