A $9.7 million affordable housing complex in Blenheim is taking the next step.
Council is set to agree to a contract to build 17 units consisting of 15 three-bedroom and two four-bedroom family units in a three storey affordable rent housing development at 36 McGeorge Street.
A report going before council at its meeting Monday night said rents will be set at 80 per cent of the average market rent for all units.
"The project will be targeting families as tenants," wrote Director of Housing Services Ray Harper in his report. "There are currently no multi-bedroom affordable housing units for Blenheim families."
Units will be offered on a first come, first served basis and only eligible households will be considered.
A household must meet the occupancy standard and the eligibility requirements set by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH) in the Ontario Priorities Housing Initiative (OPHI) and Canada-Ontario Community Housing Initiative (COCHI) Program guidelines.
Households must also be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants, household income must be below what the MMAH index prescribes as a limit, and household members must have filed income taxes in the previous calendar year.
Construction is planned to begin in June 2023 and be completed by December 2024.
The project is being jointly funded through Canada-Ontario Community Housing Initiative, Ontario Priorities Housing Initiative, a CMHC grant, and municipal housing reserves.
