CK's new baseball team finally has new name

After a swing and a miss choosing its original name in January, Chatham-Kent's new Intercounty Baseball League team has a new name.

On Thursday afternoon at Fergie Jenkins Field, the team revealed it will be called the Chatham-Kent Barnstormers.

The team also revealed its new colours and logo for the 2024 inaugural season.

Team officials said the name is a reminder of Chatham-Kent's rich baseball history, acknowledges all of Chatham-Kent's homegrown baseball talent, and is a reminder of the legacy left by the Chatham Coloured All-Stars.

Barnstorming refers to the practice of teams traveling from town to town to play, according to the team.

The expansion team quickly dropped its original Blackbirds name in January just three days after it was announced following community feedback saying it was derogatory and connected to slavery.

Team officials said at the time they were not familiar with the term and meant no harm.

The Chatham-Kent Barnstormers play their home opener in May of 2024.
