Shoplifting suspect arrested in Chatham

A 49-year-old man who allegedly stole from a business on King Street in Chatham has been arrested.

Chatham-Kent police said they learned about the alleged theft shortly after 3:30 p.m. Saturday and were able to track the man down at around 8:45 a.m. Sunday on Wellington Street West in Chatham.

Police said when they arrived at the store, they learned the man had spoken with staff there and had been loitering around before he took an item from the counter display and left without paying for it.

Officers were able to use video surveillance footage to identify the person involved.

The accused was charged with theft and possession of stolen property and was taken to police headquarters, then released with conditions and a future court date.

Chatham man arrested in domestic violence case

A 28-year-old Chatham man is facing four charges -- including mischief and assault -- in connection with a domestic violence investigation in Chatham.

Police said they got involved when officers were called to King Street West at around 10:40 a.m. Sunday for a report of an altercation between a man and a woman.

Investigators said they learned that the man and woman were arguing in an apartment on that street when the man allegedly hit the woman multiple times and then took off with her purse.

Police said the woman followed the man, at which point, he allegedly broke her cell phone by throwing it to the ground.

Officers said they also learned that a similar incident had taken place on Saturday, resulting in "minor physical injuries" to the woman.

As a result of the investigation, the man was arrested and charged with two counts of assault, one count of assault causing bodily harm, and one count of mischief.

He was taken to police headquarters and was later released with conditions and a future court date.

Chatham-Kent woman arrested after disturbance in Dresden

A 48-year-old Chatham-Kent woman is in trouble with the law again after police allegedly found her at an address she had been ordered to stay away from.

Chatham-Kent police said they found the woman at an address on Holden Street in Dresden while they were following up on a disturbance call that came in at around 7:15 p.m. Sunday.

Officers said they were told that some individuals were arguing in an apartment and destroying property there.

When police arrived, they allegedly found the woman and confirmed that she had been banned from attending that specific address.

She was arrested, charged with failing to comply with an undertaking, and taken back to police headquarters.

The woman who was arrested was later released with conditions and a future court date.
