Police find wanted man asleep behind the wheel
A 53-year-old Chatham Township man who was wanted for assault got an early morning wakeup call from Chatham-Kent police.
Police said they found him asleep behind the wheel of a vehicle with his foot on the brake and the vehicle in drive after they got a call at around 4:15 a.m. Tuesday about a car that was stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of Wellington Street West and Fifth Street in Chatham.
Officers said they were told the vehicle was stopped there for approximately 30 minutes.
Police said the man was arrested for impaired driving and taken to police headquarters for further tests. The vehicle was towed from the scene.
Officers said after they arrested the man for impaired driving, they learned he was wanted on an outstanding warrant for an assault in January 2023.
When police searched the man, they allegedly found some suspected fentanyl and methamphetamine on him.
He was charged with assault and two counts of drug possession and was later released with conditions and a future court date.

Man arrested for skipping court
Chatham-Kent police have caught up with a local man accused of skipping his court date.
Police said the man was initially arrested in June 2022 in connection with a break-and-enter that took place on Murray Street in Wallaceburg.
He was later released with conditions and a future court date, but he allegedly failed to show up for that appointment.
Police said they found him on Albert Street shortly before 8 p.m. Monday and arrested him.
A 33-year-old Chatham-Kent man was charged with failing to attend court and was later released with a future court date.

Teen charged with assault after argument
A 16-year-old Chatham youth is charged with two counts of assault and four counts of uttering threats after an argument turned violent Monday night.
Police said they were called to an address on Angler Line in Dover Township for an assault investigation shortly before 9 p.m. Monday and learned the youth had allegedly started threatening people and assaulted them.
The youth was taken to police headquarters and released with conditions and a future court date.

Man arrested for hitting someone after they asked him about his feelings
A 31-year-old Chatham man is facing an assault charge after he came home angry and hit someone in the face when they asked him why he was upset, according to police.
Chatham-Kent police said they were called to the address on Thames Street in Chatham for a domestic disturbance at around 10 p.m. Monday.
Officers said when they arrived, they learned the man was angry when he got home and started throwing items and slamming doors when he was asked why he was upset.
Police said the situation escalated to the point where the man allegedly hit the victim in the face.
He was arrested on Simcoe Lane in Chatham, charged with assault, and taken to police headquarters, then later released with conditions and a future court date.
