A retreat for overwhelmed farmers and first responders is hosting an open house this weekend.
With its completion in sight, Three Oaks Cabin will is inviting the public out to the property on Saturday for tours and a memorial tree planting.
The Cabin, which is located at 6522 Bilton Line, is being built by the Bergsma family in memory of their son Dalles, a farmer and member of the Dawn Euphemia Fire Department, who died by suicide in 2020.
"We've been at this build for quite sometime and we're near completion now," said Diane Bergsma. "Were hoping to plant three oak trees on Saturday. One tree will be planted by the family, one tree will be planted by farmers who were close to Dalles, and one tree will be planted by the fire department that he was a part of."
It's taken three years to get the cabin to where it is today, according to Bergsma, but a grand opening is in sight. The family is aiming to open the cabin up to famers and first responders in January.
"Families or individuals staying at the cabin, will be provided with mental health programing, while also being encouraged to enjoy the woodlot," said Bergsma. "When they go home, they will receive a follow up call from a therapist registered with the National Farmers Alliance."
Bergsma said stays are based on how long a person might need it, but ideally, four to five days is encouraged.
Online registration is expected to be up and running by early December.
The open house runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 21.
