Man charged after police chase on Hwy. 401

A Mississauga man faces a list of charges after a dangerous driver led to a brief police chase, the use of a spike belt, and a rolling stop on Highway 401.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police, officers from the Middlesex detachment were called to the highway in London for reports of a dangerous driver around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday. They tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver would not stop. This led to a brief pursuit that was stopped for safety reasons.

A second call to police was made when the same vehicle was spotted being driven in a dangerous manner in Elgin County.

Police laid down a spike belt in an attempt to stop the vehicle, but the attempt was unsuccessful.

"Due to the increased risk to public safety, police conducted a rolling stop on the vehicle on Highway 401 westbound at Victoria Road in Chatham-Kent, where an individual was taken into custody without incident. The highway was closed briefly," police said. .

One of the police cruisers sustained minor damage. No injuries were reported.

A 29-year-old Mississauga man is charged with dangerous driving, flight from police, stunt driving, failing to stop for an emergency vehicle, unsafe movement, and having care or control of a vehicle with cannabis readily available.

He has been released from custody and is to appear in court on January 23, 2024.
