Missing gun found after break-in southeast of Rodney

Provincial police have found a missing gun, feared taken by a break-in suspect still on the run southeast of Rodney.

Elgin OPP and Chatham Kent police were called to a home on Talbot Line Near Furnival Road in West Elgin around 8 a.m. on Friday. The homeowner reported being confronted by a trespasser on his property after finding the door to an outbuilding damaged.

The trespasser allegedly took off running after the confrontation.

The homeowner was not injured, but did tell police a firearm was missing from the property. Police initially believed the trespasser may have taken the weapon, however, it was later found near the property during an evidence search.

An extensive search of the property and the surrounding area was conducted by officers with the emergency response team, tactics and rescue unit, and canine unit. During that time nearby residents were advised to stay away from the area due to the "active investigation."

The suspect was not found, police said.

Officers are continuing to look for a man described as White, 20-years-old, with a slim build. He was wearing jogging pants and a reflective construction jacket or vest.

Police are reminding residents to be aware of their personal safety at all times. They advise anyone who encounters the suspect not to approach the man, but to call 911 immediately.
