Wheatley, Tilbury residents to minimize water usage next week

As of next week, Chatham-Kent's public utilities commission will be asking people in Wheatley and Tilbury to temporarily conserve water.

Darren Galbraith, the commission’s general manager, made the announcement during Thursday’s virtual meeting.

The bulk water station in Tilbury will be temporarily shut down in the coming days until a temporary water treatment system at the Wheatley Water Treatment Plant is operating.

Currently, water is still being supplied via an interconnection with Leamington and from the south water treatment system in Chatham-Kent.

However, with daylight hours getting longer and the weather warming up, Galbraith said there is an increasing demand for water among the greenhouses in Leamington.

"We knew this was going to come, but spring has happened about a month earlier than we expected," said Galbraith. "That's why we're going to hustle and get these treatment systems going and prevent any loss of pressure throughout the system."

A date for the temporary watering restriction has not been set, but residents can expect an announcement from the utilities commission next week.

"There will be some restrictions, such as watering lawns and that sort of thing," said Galbraith.
