A warning is going out after people have been going door to door impersonating the Chatham-Kent Women's Centre and asking for donations.
CK Women's Centre has received a number of calls within the last few days about residents being approached by someone claiming to be with the organization and looking for donations. The centre does not canvass door-to-door or over the phone.
"One disturbing call we received yesterday was from a gentleman who, his wife answered the door to two men and they were asking about whether they had children, how old, their names, this kind of things, and they said they were canvassing on behalf of the Chatham-Kent Women's Centre and that is absolutely false information," said Karen Hunter, Executive Director of the Chatham-Kent Women’s Centre.
"We just want to get out there we don't do that kind of canvassing or solicitation asking for donations in the community and if anyone approaches you know that that's not us asking you for those donations," added Hunter.
Hunter said the Chatham Kent police are aware of the scam and she encourages anyone who is approached by someone claiming to be working for the centre to contact police.
The Welcome Centre in Windsor is currently canvassing door-to-door for donations and Hunter believes this might have spurred someone to impersonate the Women's Centre here in Chatham.
"People need to be alert that there are a lot of scams out there and there are organizations out there like the Welcome Centre who are legitimate and genuine and actually looking for some support from the community," said Hunter. "But unfortunately you always have those people who are hearing there are going to be door-to-door canvassers and they jump on board and people need to be wary of these kinds of things."
If you are looking to make a donation to the CK Women's Centre, Hunter said they accept donations online, through mail and in person at their location at 20 Sandys Street on Sundays and Wednesdays.
"We welcome all those donations, we appreciate that greatly," said Hunter.
