UCC Pow Wow to celebrate culture and student leadership

Ursuline College's Indigenous Youth Leadership Group will host a school-wide Pow Wow on Thursday.

Kidwin Zhiingwaak, also called Voice of the Pines, plans to bring together students, staff, and other esteemed guests to honour Indigenous cultures and traditions. Grade 8 students from Bkejwanong Territory and Wallaceburg have also been invited to attend and experience the event.

"There is something truly special about seeing school and local communities come together in celebration, learning, and respect," explained Jen Morrow, St. Clair Catholic District School Board (SCCDSB) Superintendent of Education. "This Pow Wow is a powerful reminder of the importance of connection and culture, and we are so proud of the students who are leading the way."

The Pow Wow is a unique leadership opportunity for members of Kidwin Zhiingwaak.

"The grade 9-12 members of Kidwin Zhiingwaak have been actively involved every step of the way through: from planning to connecting with community, to taking on leadership roles during the pow wow," said Cortnee Goure, K-12 Indigenous Education Lead.

The students will act as head dancers and emcees, supported by mentorship from local Knowledge Carriers, Biindegaygizhig and White Lightning Clark.

The day will include two Grand Entry ceremonies, at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., featuring traditional dancing and drumming. There will also be opportunities to visit information tables led by UCC students, staff, local universities and colleges, and community partnerships. As well as a chance to enjoy Indigenous food samples and purchase arts and crafts from local vendors.

Internationally recognized Hoop Dancer, traditional singer, and activist Theland Kicknosway, Potawatami and Cree from Walpole Island First Nation, Bkejwanong Territory, is slated to perform. Additional programming includes Haudenosaunee water drumming and social dancing with Cedric Isaac, Bkejwanong Territory.
