Documentary set to examine CK housing, homeless crisis

Two sisters are producing a documentary about the housing and homelessness crisis in Chatham-Kent.

Karissa and Kat Strain, professionally known as The Sisters Strain, have spent the last few months speaking with people across the municipality who are trying to combat the issue.

The pair told CK News Today that people expecting the documentary to just be footage of people living on the streets will be disappointed.

"We're looking at places where solutions are being attempted or put in place and focusing on that rather than the problems. Drumming on the negative doesn't get us further along," said Kat.

The main goal for the sisters is to educate people about everything being done to help those in need.

"Maybe we can realize as a community that there's a lot of work behind the scenes happening right now, and if we really stick together and work at finding solutions, then I'm sure we can come out of this even better," added Kat.

The documentary, which will be titled "Unhoused: A Community in Crisis," will feature over 20 interviews with people on the frontlines. The vast majority of people featured in the video are working directly in CK. However, the sisters also wanted to highlight that this issue isn't just happening locally.

"We're not the only community facing this; there are a lot of communities across Ontario and across Canada... really, it's a global issue," explained Karissa.

The sisters hope to complete the documentary by early October. The plan is to hold a free community screening before submitting the video to various film festivals.

There are also discussions about sharing the documentary with YourTV Chatham-Kent so more people can view it.
