Chatham house fire caused by improperly disposed cigarette

A house fire in Chatham has caused an estimated $250,000 in damage.

Chatham-Kent (CK) Fire and Rescue reported that Thursday night's blaze on Park Avenue West in Chatham was likely caused by an improperly discarded cigarette.

Fire officials said 14 firefighters responded and found three occupants outside the dwelling.

No injuries were reported.

"Crews observed smoke and flames coming out of the side of the structure. Firefighters made entry to conduct an interior search and initiate a fire attack. The fire had extended into the wall, ceiling, and concealed void spaces, making extinguishment more complex," said CK Fire.

Crews eventually contained and fully extinguished the fire, fire officials noted.
