CK asking province to help fund two vital recreation projects

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent (CK) is applying for provincial funding to get a couple of recreation projects underway.

An information report being presented to CK Council on Monday stated that grant applications will be submitted to build the South Kent Ball Diamond Complex near Communication Road and Allison Line in Blenheim and replace the ice plant and ice floor at the Blenheim Memorial Arena.

Administration said both projects are priorities identified through the Council-approved Parks and Recreation Master Plan.

The ball complex is anticipated to house four regulation-sized baseball and softball diamonds with field lighting on 32 acres of land.

"The four-diamond configuration would allow multiple games to be played at one location and strengthen Chatham-Kent’s ability to host regional tournaments. Potential economic benefits include construction and skilled-trade employment, visitor spending at local accommodations, restaurants, fuel stations and retailers, and opportunities for local vendors and sponsorships," Administration noted.

The arena needs new refrigeration equipment and a new ice floor.

"A significant interruption or facility (arena) closure would affect local sport organizations, participants, schools, families and community groups. Alternative facilities may not have sufficient ice capacity or convenient scheduling availability, and additional travel would create transportation and cost barriers for some users," said the municipality.

The estimated cost for the baseball complex is $16.7 million and $2.7 million for the Blenheim Arena.

The Municipality may request up to $10 million for the ball diamonds and $1 million for the arena.
