Sports Briefs - September 9, 2016

The NFL season kicked off last night with a rematch of the Super Bowl as the Denver Broncos hosted the Carolina Panthers. The Broncos' dominant defence came up big against Panthers quarterback Cam Newton as Denver escaped with a 21-20 victory. The Panthers had a chance to avenge their Super Bowl loss, but Carolina kicker Graham Gano missed what would have been a game-winning 50-yard field goal with four seconds left.

Tennis star Serena Williams came up short at the semifinals of the U-S Open. The world's number-1 was upset by the 10th seed last night in straight sets. Williams clutched at her left leg between points in the second set, signalling a possible injury. She double-faulted on one of her serves to end it.

Nathan MacKinnon scored twice in Team North America's 4-0 victory over Team Europe in a World Cup of Hockey exhibition game. MacKinnon, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and Johnny Gaudreau all scored in a span of less than five minutes in the second period.

In OHL pre-season action -- the London Knights lost 5-3 to the Otters in Erie.
