In Junior B hockey -- the Leamington Flyers lost 5-3 to the London Nationals -- and Sarnia edged Port Lambton 5-4 in overtime.

Justin Verlander tied a season-high with 11 strikeouts as the Detroit Tigers moved past Baltimore and into the second A-L wild-card spot by beating the Minnesota Twins 4-2 to sweep a doubleheader. The Tigers won the opener 9-2.

Russia blanked Finland 3-0 at the World Cup of Hockey to advance to the semifinals against Canada on Saturday. The Russian win knocked the 23-under Team North America squad out of the tournament.

Meanwhile -- the Czech Republic downed the United States 4-3 in the final game for both teams.

Patriots third-sting quarterback Jacoby Brissett had a 27-yard touchdown run, and LeGarrette Blount added a pair of scoring runs as New England shutout the Houston Texans 27-0.
