Sports Briefs - October 14, 2016

The LA Dodgers are headed to the National League Championship Series.

They beat the Nationals 4-3 in Washington to win the fifth and deciding game of their National League Division Series. The Dodgers will face the Cubs Saturday in Chicago for game 1 of the NLCS.

The Detroit Red Wings lost their season opener, falling 6-4 to Tampa Bay. Thomas Vanek had two goals for the Wings.

Elsewhere -- the Montreal Canadiens got by Buffalo 4-1 and the Winnipeg Jets needed overtime to beat Carolina 5-4.

Belle River's Aaron Ekblad logged a game-high 26:02 of ice time, but was held off the scoresheet in his season-opener as he and the Florida Panthers celebrated a 2-1 overtime win against the New Jersey Devils.

In the NFL's Thursday Nighter -- Philip Rivers threw for 178 yards and one touchdown to lead the San Diego Chargers past the Denver Broncos 21-13.
