Eric Staal scored the game-winner for Minnesota as the Wild topped the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2.

Three of Staal's six goals this season have come against the Leafs.

Elsewhere -- the Ottawa Senators doubled up the Sharks 4-2 in San Jose while Washington beat the Bruins 4-3 after blowing a three-goal lead earlier in the game.

More hockey news -- John Scott, the NHL enforcer who made an unlikely run to the All-Star weekend last season, has retired. He made the announcement in an article in The Players' Tribune.

In the NBA -- the Detroit Pistons faded late in a 87-77 loss to Charlotte. The loss drops the Pistons to .500 on the season.

LaSalle's Kylie Masse raced to a silver medal in the women's 100-metre backstroke at the FINA world short-course swimming championships in Windsor. Canada also won a bronze in the mixed 4-by-50 metre freestyle relay.
