The Windsor Spitfires used three late goals to put away the visiting Flint Firebirds 6-3 Saturday night at the WFCU Centre.
The Spitfires now have sole possession of third place in the OHL West Division with 26 points.
Flint started out with a power play goal at 6:30 of the opening segment, the first of the evening from Eric Uba. Exactly three minutes later, Mathew MacDougall scored his seventh of the year to tie the game at a goal apiece.
The second period was an offensive explosion on both sides. Uba scored his second goal at just 14 seconds after the faceoff. The Spits responded with goals to take their first lead of the contest. Will Cuylle scored the tying goal at 4:31 and Connor Corcoran put in the go-ahead goal about a minute-and-a-half later. The Firebirds tied the game again at 3-3 as Ryan Bangs scored his first goal of the year. Windsor came back with back-to-back goals once more before the second intermission. Luke Kutkevicius and Cole Purboo were the guilty parties.
Louka Henault scored his first goal of the year in the third period.
Michael DiPietro stopped 26 out of 29 shots in goal for Windsor. Emanuel Vella had 27 saves for the Firebirds.
The Spitfires will complete a quick turnaround when the rival London Knights visit the WFCU Centre Sunday afternoon.
