Rock The Park Organizers Look For Bylaw Exemption

City councillors are considering waiving the special events bylaw for Rock The Park, allowing organizers to be in Harris Park for five straight days.

The current bylaw allows for events spanning only four days.

Next week, an amendment to the bylaw will be considered at the Community and Protective Services Committee. Members of the public in favour or against the event extension will have a chance to speak.

Rock The Park is slated for July 14-18. The concert is a fundraiser for Bethany's Hope Foundation, an organization committed to funding research for and supporting those with Metachromatic Leukodystrophy.

Harris Park is surrounded by residential neighbourhoods.

"We have to strike a balance between a neighbourhood's needs, a community's needs and then also recognize that this is an initiative that raises significant dollars for Bethany's Hope, and has a significant impact on our local economy," says Mayor Matt Brown, who put forward an emergent motion at Tuesday night's council meeting. "I think we'll hear from many different groups."

As of right now, Rock The Park has concerts scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday nights.
