Surprise Snowfall Blankets Region

Meteorologists with Environment Canada say this might not be the last morning you'll have to use your snow brush and scraper on your vehicle this season.

Flurries moved into the region on Wednesday afternoon, dashing the hopes of mid-week golfers and contributing to several minor collisions. More flurries are expected Thursday evening.

"It's a cold air mass that is plaguing all of southern and northern Ontario, it's not pleasant, but it's not a record amount of snow for this time of year. We actually got 12cm on April 23 of 2005," says Warning Preparedness Meteorologist Peter Kimbell. "Tonight we are looking for a low of -4 C, that's well below normal. This time of year of year the normal low would be about 4 C, so it's about eight degrees below normal. We may even break a record from 1967 when we got to -3.9 C."

By the weekend we will see some sun and highs of 13 C both Saturday and Sunday. The weather office predicts those temperatures will hold steady for the foreseeable future.

Middlesex OPP issued a reminder on Thursday morning after attending several minor collisions.

"Driving too fast is the number one cause of collisions in winter driving conditions. For everyone’s safety, the motoring public is reminded, and urged, to slow down. Plan for your commute to take more time, drive with extra care, and be especially cautious near bridges and overpasses."

Many drivers have already had their snow tires removed for the season and driving is not ideal. Callers to Blackburn News report slippery conditions on the highways, especially Hwy. 402 toward Strathroy. Ramps to and from the highways are also reported slick.
