As the world remembers 9/11, the London Fire Department is also commemorating three of their own who have died as a result of work-related illnesses.
Three names will be added to the plaque outside of the London Fire Department's Memorial Headquarters.
Captain Wayne Arnold, Platoon Chief Ken Porter and Fire Cheif Gary Weese lives ended as a result of occupational diseases. Their deaths are now recognized as being directly related to their jobs, with new legislation naming a total of 15 occupational diseases for firefighters.
Members of the fire fighting, police and emergency services community gathered Friday morning at the corner of Clarence and Horton St. to honour the three and mark the 14th anniversary of the terror attacks in the United States.
"I don't think anybody can argue against the fact that the world changed significantly that day. There was a tremendous loss of life, both civilian and the emergency service community," says President of the London Professional Fire Fighters Association John Hassan. "They stepped up and they tried to rescue their fellow human beings. If we forget what they did then I think it's a disservice to the sacrifice that they made."
A piper played Amazing Grace and the community paused for a moment of silence.
