Western Fair Officially Opens

Nearly 200,000 people are expected to pass through the gates of the Western Fair over the next ten days.

The fair runs from today, September 11 until September 20.

Organizers say they have focused on making this a more family friendly event this year.

"We've got a new midway operator...and they've brought a number of new rides. We've got an adult midway and a kid land midway, which we're calling the little thrill zone," says Heather Blackwell with the Western Fair District. "We're very committed to our agricultural programming and the education component through our school tours and all that urban families can do at the fair, but certainly we've focused a lot of attention and money into family attractions."

There are no major musical acts at the fair this year, just cover bands slated for each night.

Blackwell tells BlackburnNews.com the fair foods itself will continue to be one of the main drawing points.

"Some that we think are going to be highlights this year are the bacon-wrapped grilled cheese and the deep fried red velvet Oreos," notes Blackwell.
