Date Set For Launch Of 548 Area Code

Two years after it was first announced, a date has been set for the launch of a new area code for southwestern Ontario.

The Telecommunications Alliance announced Thursday that the 548 area code will be introduced in June 4, 2016. It will be put into use in areas currently served by the 519 and 226 area codes. Those areas include London, Woodstock, Brantford, Guelph, Kitchener-Waterloo, Owen Sound, Sarnia, Stratford, and Windsor.

According to a release from The Telecommunications Alliance, "The increased demand for communications services and technologies has led to a huge increase in the requirement for telephone numbers in this region."

The CRTC announced in October of 2013 that the 548 area code would be coming to the region, however it initially said it would happen in 2015.

Existing customers will keep their area code, but anyone searching for a new number after June 4 may be assigned a ‘548’ number.
