The London Lightning have announced they will use an upcoming home game to honour Damian Warner.
The team says the decathlete and London native will be honoured before the Lightning's February 24 game against the Niagara River Lions at Budweiser Gardens.
“Damian is a London born product that’s reached the international athletic stage that’s making our city and country proud with his accomplishments,” says Vito Frijia, Lightning owner and general manager. “I’ve personally known Damian as a basketball player since he was in grade eleven, and he’s the same person today as he was back then – humble, proud and caring with tremendous work ethic. Damian is a shining light and a perfect example of how to succeed in life to all the children of Canada.”
A Canadian decathlete, Warner is the reigning Commonwealth champion and the reigning Pan American champion. He is currently training for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil.
“The community support I have received has been amazing," says Warner. "As an athlete, just knowing that you have so many people behind you, rooting for you and people pushing you in the right direction, is an awesome feeling and its why I choose to stay in London and train here.”
Tickets for the February 24 Lightning game are available at the Budweiser Gardens Box Office.
