Influenza Claims Five More Lives

The Influenza virus has claimed the lives of another five people in the London area.

The latest Influenza Surveillance Report from the Middlesex-London Health Unit says there were 21 new, laboratory-confirmed cases of Influenza between April 3 and April 9. That figure is lower than the previous week, but the five deaths are the highest weekly amount the health unit has reported since this flu season began.

Since September 1, there have been 17 Influenza-related deaths Middlesex-London. A total of 426 laboratory-confirmed cases have been reported along with 157 hospitalizations. Ten outbreaks in long-term care facilities have been reported, although there were none last week.

Although the flu season seemed to get off to a slow start in our region, the number of cases has been steadily climbing since mid-February.
