With one month to go before eyes are glued to the skies above the city, Airshow London officials are busying putting the finishing touches on the aviation spectacle.
More than 50 planes have been confirmed for the September 17-18 show London International Airport with the possibility of last minute additions still in the cards.
"All that's really left to do is finalize our lineup, finalize our venue location set-up plan, and test our safety plan," says Dave De Kelver, Airshow Event Director. "We're in great shape."
London's first airshow in 12 years will feature performances by the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, the CF-18 Demonstration Team lead by Londoner Captain Ryan (Roid) Kean, the F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team, and the Canadian Armed Forces Parachute Team - The SkyHawks.
"Ticket sales are doing amazing so far, better than expected," says De Kelver. "We've tried to encourage advance sales by providing a $5 off price point instead of buying at the gate. You have the opportunity to reserve your parking spot and get free shuttle services to the venue. It means you'll know exactly where you are going the day of the show, can get in and get your ticket a little bit cheaper."
Demand for the airshow has been so overwhelming officials have decided to add a Friday night sneak preview on September 16. Cost for the one hour performance is $15 with limited tickets available.
"We're calling it the Hour of Power show," says De Kelver. "It's a one hour show that will feature some of the planes that will be performing on the Saturday and Sunday, doing an abbreviated performance. Give the city a little taste of what is coming."
Roughly 25,000 people from across southwestern Ontario are expected to attend the two-day event. Proceeds from the airshow will be split between the Children's Health Foundation, Fanshawe College aviation technology bursaries, and veteran organizations.
So far, 500 people have volunteered to assist with everything from parking and transportation, security, and photography. But not all positions have been filled.
"We can always use more volunteers. We have positions still available in the VIP events and supporting various areas on the site," says De Kelver. "The one thing about volunteering at an airshow is you're bound to see the event."
