The United Way of London and Middlsesex is, once again, setting a lofty goal for its annual campaign.
After exceeding last year's record goal of $9.1-million, the agency announced at its annual Harvest Lunch on Thursday a goal of $9.172-million for the 2016 campaign.
The 2015 campaign brought in a total of $9,113,630, marking the 15th consecutive year the United Way of London and Middlsesex reached its target.
Chair of the 2016 campaign, Dr. Karima Velji, says it is important that they hit the goal again this year.
“For me, our campaign is about the incredible impact that United Way has in people’s lives, right here in London and Middlesex County,” Velji says. “When you give to the Campaign, you transform lives. Whether it’s giving a child a good start, providing someone with a path out of poverty, or helping a newcomer thrive, I give to United Way knowing my donation creates lasting change.”
The United Way says it supports a "vital network of more than 80 programs and services that help people build brighter futures for themselves and their families."
According to CEO Kelly Ziegner, it affects the lives of 20% of people in the community.
“Last year, one in five people in London and Middlesex County benefited from a United Way-funded program or service,” Ziegner says. “By coming together and rallying behind our goal, we have the power to ignite possibility for more than 85,000 people at a time when they need it most.”
