Comic Con Blasts Into London

Fans of comic books, film, gaming and all things pop culture are about to invade the City of London.

The London Comic Con kicks off on Friday at the Western Fair District Progress building, and boasts over 150 vendors, interactive fan zones, and a line-up of celebrities.

"We call it the pop culture celebration of awesomeness," says London Comic Con President Andrew Kitt. "Although we host in London, we are so far reaching, we've actually adapted the hashtag #519comiccon as we have people traveling from every corner of Southwestern Ontario and even beyond."

Kitt says this is the third year the event has been held in London.

"You get to come out, express yourself, meet with like minded people, share in the laughs, share in the excitement," he says. "You will enjoy yourself so much, because the energy and the people are just so infectious."

Actor Kevin Sorbo will he on hand to perform a ribbon cutting for the event on Friday at 3:30pm, just inside the entrance to the Progress building.

"Of course, Kevin Sorbo is known best as Hercules from The Legendary Journeys, so we're cutting this ribbon with a great, big Hercules-style sword," says Kitt.

Some of the other celebrities appearing at the weekend event are LeVar Burton (Star Trek, Reading Rainbow), Alan Thicke (Growing Pains), Lori Petty (Orange is the New Black, Point Break) and Mark Boone Jr (Sons of Anarchy).

A cosplay competition will also be held with a cash prize of $1,000, and it's expected to bring costume makers from across the province.

"You don't have to come out and consider yourself a hardcore geek or nerd. Our con is for everybody," says Kitt. "You're going to walk in and be like, 'Oh, I really enjoy this,' or "I didn't even know about this, this is super cool.' You're going to find something that you enjoy."

The London Comic Con will run Friday 4pm to 9pm, Saturday 10am to 8pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm.
