One of Canada's best known sports broadcasters will be in London on Friday.
Rod Black will deliver the keynote speech at the Hope in the City Breakfast at the Best Western Lamplighter Inn on Wellington Rd. The annual breakfast, now in its fifth year, is hosted by the Salvation Army of London.
"[Black] is all about family so that's one of the reasons we wanted him for this breakfast as our keynote speaker," said Shannon Wise, spokesperson for the Salvation Army. "He will speak about some of his experiences and how he is a supporter of the Salvation Army and what we do."
Black is a five time Gemini award nominee and a recipient of the Queen's Jubilee medal for his work with Foster Parents Plan of Canada. In his 30 years of sports journalism, Black has done play-by-play for the CFL, been the voice of figure skating, and undertook hosting duties at the Olympics.
Past keynote speakers have included former Toronto Maple Leafs forward Ron Ellis and Canadian commentator Rex Murphy.
Wise said the winner of the 2016 Hope Award will also be recognized at the breakfast.
"I can't reveal her name yet, but it's a wonderful journey back from addiction and how the Salvation Army and the Centre of Hope helped her to get out of that place," said Wise.
The annual breakfast gives business leaders in the city a chance to to learn about and support the various programs the Salvation Army provides. Funds raised through the breakfast will go towards addiction counselling, assistance with living costs, and providing food and shelter to those in need.
