For the first time in two years, Londoners could see a white Christmas.
Environment Canada predicts a fresh dusting of snow will fall across the region Wednesday night, adding to what we already have on the ground. The national weather agency says despite milder temperatures in the forecast, there is a 67% chance that London and the surrounding area will have a white Christmas.
"Temperatures are expected to be a little milder as we head into the days towards Christmas but it doesn't look like it's enough to really put much of a dent into the snowpack that's out there already," said Geoff Coulson, meteorologist with Environment Canada
The likelihood of a white Christmas comes after two consecutive green ones.
"The last time, previous to this one, that we did have a white Christmas was Christmas of 2013 when the airport was reporting 5cm of snow on the ground," said Coulson.
Christmas day is expected to bring a high of 4C and a messy mix of snow and rain that could hamper travel plans late in the day.
"A system is expected to get itself together in the Colorado-area, and give true winter storm conditions in northern Ontario. But temperatures should be mild enough across the southwest from Windsor through London, and into Toronto to keep most of what this event provides in the form of rain," said Coulson.
He said motorists hitting the streets Christmas night and Boxing Day will want to watch for weather updates from Environment Canada.
"As we get towards the end of the week when Environment Canada has a better sense of what this system can do, we may in fact see some special weather statements being issued for portions of southwestern Ontario including the London-area," said Coulson.
Seasonal and above seasonal temperatures are expected to stretch into the new year.
