Most Local Employers Planning To Hire

There is encouraging news for job seekers in the London area.

According to the 2017 EmployerOne survey, 64% of employers who responded say they are planning on hiring in the coming months. The survey suggests over 1,000 full time positions will be filled, while 450 part time workers will be hired.

The challenge for those employers, according to the survey, is that they are having a difficult time finding potential employees who have the proper mix of education and qualifications necessary to "professionally interact with colleagues and the public." In 2016, just under half of the respondents had trouble filling positions, citing a shortage of applicants, lack of qualifications, and a lack of work experience.

Other survey findings include:

  • The top three reasons respondents are expecting to hire this year are expansion, filling vacancies, and season opportunities.
  • Jobs in education, law, social and government services, sales and service, and manufacturing and utilities are in great demand.
  • The top five in demand skills in the region are customer service, teamwork/interpersonal, work ethic, dependability, and the ability to work with little or no direction.
The survey was conducted by the Elgin, Middlesex, Oxford Workforce Planning and Development Board and is based on the responses of 368 businesses. It is is used to identify hiring patterns, challenges, concerns and successes in the current workforce.
