The City of London says it will be at least Monday before baseball games, soccer matches, and cricket contests can be played on city-owned grass fields.
An email from Mike Vandertuin, Supervisor of Allocations and Sport Services with the city, has been sent to sports leagues across London to inform them of the decision to close fields until next week.
"The amount of rain we have received over the past several days as well as the forecast for the rest of the week and weekend have resulted in saturated and unplayable conditions," the email says. "To avoid any early permanent damage to the fields we have decided that the best thing to do is close them all until next Monday in the hopes that we get a few nice days that will allow them to adequately dry out and be safe for everyone to use."
The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority says the London-area has received 30-50 mm of rain over the past week. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement that forecasts another 40-70mm before the end of the weekend.
"We apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused but wanted to provide as much advance notice as possible," Vendertuin's email says.
