A beloved monument in Woodstock was spray-painted with a swastika in an overnight rash of vandalism that also saw racist comments and profanities appear throughout the south end of the city.
Woodstock police say the hateful symbol was spray painted on the Snow Countess, a 5 ton statue of a Holstein cow at Springbank Ave. and Dundas St. between Sunday night and Monday morning. Black spray paint was also used to write racist comments and profanities on a church, the side of a house, vehicles, and garage doors.
In total, there were eight reports of graffiti on Bee St., Isabell St., Frizelle Dr., and Alice St. Damage is estimated at $2,000.
The graffiti has already been cleaned off of many of the defaced properties including the Snow Countess.
At this point, police are not investigating the act of vandalism as a hate crime.
Police are asking anyone with information about the vandalism to call them at 519-537-2323 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
