Facebook Scam Costs Norfolk Resident $100K

Provincial police are warning the public after a Norfolk County resident lost $100,000 in a Facebook scam.

Norfolk OPP were called by a resident on Monday afternoon, who told them about the scam. Investigators say the victim was notified on Facebook that they had won a large lottery, but would have to send money to release the winnings.

The victim ended up sending about $100,000 but never received any prize money.

Police say scammers are using Facebook more often now in their search for victims. The OPP is recommending that people never send money up front on the promise of a prize or lottery. People should also, according to police, never accept a friend request, engage in a chat, or respond to a message from an unknown person.

It's also recommended that Facebook users change all privacy setting to "Friends." This will allow only people you know and trust to search and access your profile page.
