Police Investigating St. Thomas Park Arson

Police in St. Thomas are looking to speak to a young man on a bicycle after a park slide was "deliberately " set on fire.

The slide in Burwell Rd. park was set ablaze around 9:15pm on Monday. The flames caused a section of the plastic to melt, causing an estimated $2,000 in damage.

"A number of the sections will need to be replaced," said Constable Tanya Calvert. "(The fire) caused enough damage to take the play equipment out of commission and make it unsafe but it didn't totally destroy it."

Calvert said no accelerant was used but police are treating the incident as an arson. Officers have spoke to witnesses that were in the area at the time and are now looking for a person of interest.

"There is a male that was seen leaving the area that we would like to speak to. He was seen riding on a BMX bike away from the area around the time of the fire," said Calvert.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 519-631-1225.
