UPDATE: Majors Find New Opponent And Change Date For Charity Game

The London Majors have found a new opponent to take the spot of the now disbanded Guelph Royals for the team's charity game at Labatt Park.

The Majors and the Royals were scheduled to meet Friday night for the sixth annual Purple In the Park game in support of the London Abused Women's Centre (LAWC). But in a sudden twist, the Royals announced late Wednesday that the team was taking a leave of absence for the rest of the season.

The move left Majors scrambling to find another opponent, but the team announced Thursday that the Purple in the Park game will be Sunday, when the Majors host the Brantford Red Sox.

Purple in the Park is a way for the Majors to call attention to the issue of men's violence against women. Each player dons a purple jersey which is then signed and auctioned off to fans during the game, with all proceeds going to the LAWC.

"It's a very important game for us. LAWC is a great organization and they do a lot of good in the community," said Roop Chanderdat, general manager of the London Majors. "For me personally, I want to see the game played for the LAWC and hopefully we can find some way to make that happen."

The family that has owned the Royals for the past eight years announced in a news release Wednesday that the team was taking "a leave of absence" to pursue new investors. It is hoped a new owner for the team can be found and that the Royals will be able to return next season.
