Oxford OPP had to close a portion of Hwy. 401 after a two-vehicle crash on Tuesday morning.
Constable Stacey Culbert says a box truck from the Canadian Blood Services was travelling in the middle lane on the Hwy. 401 just east of the Hwy. 19 interchange when it made an unsafe lane change and hit the back end of a transport truck trailer.
"That caused the box truck to spin out of control, finally striking the centre median," says Culbert. "After that, we had a bit of a debris explosion from that truck, so now we have some clean-up that we have to do on the highway."
The driver of the Canadian Blood Services truck was taken to the hospital with minor injuries while the driver of the transport truck was not hurt. The OPP say the driver of the box truck has been charged with careless driving.
Canadian Blood Services says there were blood and plasma platelet products on the truck at the time of the crash.
Spokesman Marco Ouji says the products were contained and there was no spillage, but the contents are being disposed of.
Replacement orders were en route to replenish the loss.
He says their national inventory allows them to withstand such incidents but the need for blood always remains. -With files from Dave Dentinger
